2025 Legislative Session Week 2 Update

Week 2 Legislative Update Report

The first week of the legislature is over. Below is a link to our updated tracking sheet.

Two Issues of Note at the end of Week One

SB 125    Eviction Amendments  Nate Blouin (D), Salt Lake City

One bill to see action last week when the sponsor was invited to speak to the Women’s State Legislative Council group. Rep Blouin railed against treble damages as punitive and immoral. Paul Smith, Executive Director, countered and explained treble damages reduce the number of evictions and are a clear consequence of not refusing to resolve issues when landlords serve notices and file lawsuits. Click here to view RHA talking points on this issue.

HB 149     Single Family Home Ownership Amendments          Tyler Clancy, (R) Provo

This bill was targeted at Blackrock and other corporate entities. In Utah we have very few rentals owned by Wall Street, only 3%, and this bill would have significantly limited the ability of any investors to own rental properties in Utah, including anyone who uses an LLC. Property rights groups met with the sponsor, who has committed to hold this version for now.

More to come very soon – stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Paul Smith
